During Christmas time, Vienna is extra enchanting – with its Christmas lights, festively decorated shopping streets and, most importantly, Christmas markets. It’s hard not to notice the delightful Christmas stalls, delicious smell of punch, and lovely Christmas atmosphere when wandering Vienna in December.

The inner city, in particular, is full of Christmas markets – each of which has its own special features –and what’s on offer is generally of a very high quality. In order to share all of these wonderful places with you, we have perfected a route through the city center that stops by each market. During our Christmas market hopping, jump on or off whenever you want – but it’s best to visit them all. Let’s get started!

1. Stop: Art Advent Market on Karlsplatz

Our first stop is the hotspot Karlsplatz, reachable with the U1, U2, and U4 subways, many tramlines and, of course, by foot. Directly in front of the impressive Karlskriche (St. Charles Church), you will find an especially beautiful Christmas market. It is well known for its art and handicraft – is perfect for personal one-of-a-kind Christmas presents made with love and care. Instead of going to an art exhibition, you could be inspired strolling through the market while enjoying an organic apple honey punch or garlic soup bread bowl. And this Christmas market is the only one in Vienna that sells just organic products and stands for sustainability and regionality. You will love it!

2. Advent pleasure Market at the Opera House  

You can reach this Christmas Market by foot from Karlsplatz in four minutes. It’s tiny and sweet, with regional products and lovingly arranged stands. This market is also canopied and can be used as a shelter when it rains or (hopefully) snows. When you’re finished here, grab another punch to go and drink it along the famous Kärtnerstraße.

3. Stop: Christmas Market on Stephansplatz

After some Christmas shopping along Kärntnerstraße – or time spent simply admiring the window shutters and the elaborate Christmas lighting – you will be standing in front of Vienna’s most iconic landmark, and seeing it in a different light. In December, the Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) is surrounded by several stalls. This market has been around since 1999 and is one of the most iconic and traditional. And the surroundings – the heart of the city – are especially enchanting.

4. Old Viennese Christmas Market Freyung

Nine minutes later, Vienna’s very first Christmas market awaits you. Having started in 1772, the ambience at the Old Viennese Christmas market Freyung is nostalgic and gentle. It’s the perfect space to come and rest: calm and unhurried but never boring. Nearly every day, there are well-structured and varied events. Art lovers can learn how to blow Christmas tree balls, Austrian choirs and musicians from different places around the country intensify the Christmas mood, and a lovely program ensures that the children are entertained. 

When visiting this Christmas market, don’t forget to have a look at Austria’s longest nativity scene – based on a painting from 1830 by Josef Ritter von Führich! And directly next to the Freyung is the Am Hof Christmas Market, which is also worth a visit.

5. Vienna Christmas World on Rathausplatz

For a different kind of experience, check out the Christmas Market in Vienna’s city square. Although it takes only eight minutes to amble between these two markets, the difference is immense. Illuminated trees and huge blue-and-red sparkling decorations can be seen from far away. With over 150 stalls, it is the biggest Christmas market in Vienna – and it becomes more impressive every year. In December, this market is a real hotspot at which to meet friends and family; the atmosphere is exuberant and the things on offer very versatile. 6. Christmas Market on Spittelberg

A six minute walk away is the unique market on Spittelberg. This Christmas market is not positioned in a square, but between three really cute narrow alleys. The enchanting atmosphere of this original preserved suburb makes it especially beautiful to walk along – and its Christmas stalls offer excellent arts, crafts, and delicacies. This magical place really leads you to believe in Christmas dreams.

7. Christmas Village on Maria-Theresien-Platz

Six minutes further and you’re standing between two of the most impressive buildings in Vienna: the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum Vienna) and the Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum Vienna), which look nearly identical. In the center of the square, you can see the grand monument of Austria’s famous Empress Maria Theresia. The location is unbeatable, given its history and nobility. Why not combine your visit with a trip to the museum – and afterwards, finish off the evening with roasted almonds or homemade Christmas cookies. 10 Viennese Coffee Houses you have to visit

Viennese Coffee Houses are some of the most famous establishments in the city, just think of Sacher or Demel. To experience the lifestyle of real Viennese and sample Vienna’s typical atmosphere, it is essential to visit a traditional Coffee House in Vienna at least once during your stay. The special flair and old-fashioned furniture of a classical Coffee House will sweep you away not only because of their historical significance, but also because of their delicious specialities on offer.

Historical value

Inhabitants know that when we speak of traditional Viennese Coffee Houses, we don’t think of simple restaurants or bars, but of locations with their very own character. Therefore, visitors often stay long after finishing their coffee or meal, as it is typical to take your time while enjoying the calm atmosphere or to meet with friends. This tradition goes back to the time when Coffee Houses in Vienna were numerous and considered very modern. Their popularity reached a peak at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

This era even has its own designation: the Wiener Kaffeehauskultur. These cultural aspects ensure the secure existence of these old Coffee Houses, as they weren’t only used for eating and drinking, but also as places to write, compose, or to experience creative inspiration in general. Numerous artists, musicians, poets and writers visited their favourite Coffee Houses on a regularl basis.

Fort instance, the famous writers Arthur Schnitzler, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Stefan Zweig all relaxed or worked in Viennese Coffee Houses (some of them are now called Literarenkaffees) while the writers are called Kaffeehausliteraren. Artists such as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele also enjoyed the Coffee Houses’ atmosphere. In addition, these places were also used for creative and philosophical exchanges amongst the artists.

As you can see, art and culture were strongly connected with Coffee Houses at this time, as they were places where one could forget about the outside world, along with their worries and duties.

Unfortunately, Kaffeehauskultur was replaced with modern bars and Coffee House chains. The Kaffeehaussterben (coffehouse-dying) started in the 1950s and left the Ringstraße with only 4 Coffee Houses instead of 15. Now,  the remaining ones have an exceptional value and are still well attended – likely because you can easily imagine the old, relaxed Vienna instead of today’s bustling metropolis.

1.   Cafe Hawelka

The Cafe Hawelka in the first district was one of the most famous Künstlerkaffees in Vienna. Once visited by Helmut Qualtinger and Oskar Werner, this place is characterized not only by its comfortable and cosy atmosphere, but because of its legendary Buchteln – typical bohemain sweet delicacies. They were once made by Josefine Hawelka herself and should not be missed.

2. Cafe Central

Especially around 1900, the elegant Cafe Central was regularly visited by intellectuals as the architect Adolf Loos and the psychologist Sigmund Freud. It is also in the first district, and has an impressive effect on visitors because of its noble design and huge portico. You can taste the original Patisserie Cafe Central Torte or classics like Marillenpalatschinken or Apfelstrudel. A rather unusual peculiarity is the Patisserie Sisi Punschkrapfen – like the empress’ favourite flower lavender, the cake is lilac in colour.

3. Hotel Sacher

In the past, Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Sisi were delivered with the most delicious sweets from selected bakeries and confectioneries. One of them was the Hotel Sacher, which is especially known because of its Sachertorte – a chocolate cake with an unmistakable taste, and certainly one of the most famous chocolate cakes in the world. Tourists love them as well as locals, and a visit at Hotel Sacher to taste the original Sachertorte with a Viennese coffee is a must when in Vienna.

4. Zuckerbäckerei Demel

A second bakery favoured by the emperor was the Zuckerbäckerei Demel, which has existed since 1786 at the Michaelerplatz. Even as a child, Emperor Franz was thrilled by their refined prepared sweets, and he favoured Demel his whole life. It was also a meeting place for the Viennese nobility in general, and was famous enough to remain popular even today. Although every offering at this bakery is surely delicious and the cakes lovely decorated, their hot drinks are beloved. Beside the typical Austrian Heferlkaffee or the Kleiner Brauner, you can also choose coffee with alcohol, like the Anna Demel Kaffee, made with fine orange liqueur, or the Fiaker (made with cherry booze). If you prefer hot chocolate or tea, you will also find an impressive selection.

5. Cafe Landtmann

The Cafe Landtmann is one of the last remaining Kaffeehäuser at the Ringstraße, and is still very popular. It advertises the typical Kaffehauskultur from long ago, as it has existed since 1873 and has been managed by the same family for the past 40 years. You really are encouraged to take your time and stay long after you finished your coffee, admiring the furniture and interior design, and the mirrors and walls from the golden 1920s. The noble benches are even protected as a historic monument! Furthermore, celebrities like Paul McCartney and Hillary Clinton have dined at the Cafe Landmann, which is regularly visited by Austrian politicians celebrities.

The food is excellent – you can start with breakfast at 7:30 and order dinner until 23:30. Whether you desire snacks, soup, a main meal or cake, baked goods, drinks and coffee – you could stay the whole day eating traditional Austrian food such as Schnitzel, Gulasch, Backhendl or Tafelspitz.

The use of Green Energy, Oeko-Tex and Fairtrade in our apartments

Now more than ever, it is necessary to take our environment into account. While everybody should do everything they can with the aim to save our earth’s resources, this is essential for companies, as their influence can be most significant.

It is therefore extremely important for Vienna Residence to be one of the standout green companies that care about the environment. We are aware of the need to not only protect our planet by using green energy, but also to provide our clients with towels and cosmetics made without harmful chemicals. In addition, we must also mind certain fair trade standards and understand the value of recycling.

In this article, we would like to show you some measures that we take in order to ensure that you have an environmentally friendly stay in our apartments.

Our use of green energy

We use green energy from Austria. Our apartments are supplied with electricity from the company MeinAlpenStrom, which guarantees environmentally-friendly power, regional production and a better electricity supply for the future in general. They generate electricity in their very own small hydropower plants, which is a more environmentally friendly process than large hydraulic and storage power stations. Therefore, a lot of harmful Co2 emissions can be prevented.

As you can see, Vienna Residence demands high ecological standards for the power supply in every apartment.

Certified Oeko-Tex towels and bedsheets

Besides the source of green power, our cleaning company Wirl provides our clients with Oeko-Tex towels and bedsheets.They have achieved the Oeko-Tex 100 certificate for their cotton fabrics, which ensures that their products are manufactured to a consistently high standard. This certificate is regularly checked and guarantees that the textiles do not contain carcinogenics, allergenic or irritating substances. Oeko-Tex is testing the fabrics for more than 100 regulated individual substances which are harmful to human health. All of the cleaning and washing products from our cleaning company are biodegradable and marked with the Oesterreichischen Umweltzeichen. The laundry is also done with certified cleaning products.

This is why we ask our customers to only use these towels for their body, as they are not made to clean the kitchen, furniture or any other surface. It is also important to not leave these towels on the floor or to remove makeup with them. You can find more information regarding the use of the Oeko-Tex towels in every apartment.

Fair trade body care provided in our apartments

Every apartment provides guests with body care products such as soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. We offer premium products called FAIR CosmEthics from the ADA’s cosmetics line, made with fair trade-certified ingredients such as cane sugar and Brazil nut oil. Fair trade has the significant aim to improve social, economic and environmental conditions of farmers and workers in developing regions in Africa or Asia. Because of the poor living conditions and poverty in certain, fair trade-production follows strict principles regarding modernized farming methods, better living and working conditions, fair payment and a better future in general.

As you can see, environmental and social awareness are important values for our company, and we really take care to ensure the best ecological conditions for our customers.
