Summer feelings in Vienna
How to have the best possible summer in the city
During the heat of summer, everyone is eager to spend time outside – sunbathing, swimming or simply enjoying the warm summer nights in the city. Vienna offers a variety of different opportunities to enjoy the summer. The city beams with the noise of laughing children, leisurely walkers, chatting cyclists, and couples in love.
Over the course of July and August, it gets hotter every day and people are looking for a variety of outdoor activities. The days are long, the nights magical, and everyone feels vibrant and alive. Check out these suggestions on what to do and where to go this summer. Let’s make this summer in Vienna the best you’ve ever had!
Swimming in Vienna
Sometimes all you need is cool, refreshing dip, and Vienna is fortunate to have plenty of public pools, lakes and even the Danube (for example, The Kaiserwasser). This makes it possible to cool down even while you’re in the heart of the city.
Stunning and extraordinary – The Krapfenwaldbad in the 19th district
The Krapfenwaldbad, located in the beautiful 19th district (Döbling) is surely a highlight of Vienna. The location is really impressive, as it is situated at the Cobenzel hill. Take in the breathtaking views over Vienna while dabbling in one of the four pools, or being sporty at the volleyball court or football pitch.
Huge and versatile – The Gänsehäufel at the Danube
This is surely one of the most famous swimming areas in Vienna. Located in the 22rd district on the Danube, the Gänsehäufel has existed for nearly one hundred years, and local inhabitants are quite proud of it. The territory covers approximately 300, 000 square metres and attracts up to 30,000 guests on really hot summer days. Not only are there are several pools and natural swimming areas, there is also a flume, a wave pool and countless opportunities to be physically active. There even are trampolines, a climbing garden and a nudist beach for those who dare to be bare!
Calm and natural – The Wienerberg-Teich
In the middle of the 10th district of Vienna (Favoriten), the large green meadows and natural pond are quite an unexpected delight at the Wienerberg-Teich. This area (of around 117 hectares) in area near the Wienerberg is not only perfect to relax on the grassland or in the pond, but also to take a walk or go for a run at one of the running routes. Do you have a dog? Then we recommend using the dog area!
Activities for the whole day
Africa Days Vienna at the Donauinsel
This special event is so multifaceted that people often spend their whole day (or several days) attending it and taking in the wide variety of activities on offer.
At Africa Days Vienna, you encounter the fascinating and diverse world of African culture. From 10th to the 27th August, the Donauinsel becomes a place where people dance, sing and live the African culture. Regardless of your age, origin or gender, you will find yourself thrilled by the unique vibe of this festival. Children can enjoy themselves with children’s programs, while adults can watch the various performances or stroll through the streets. Countless stalls offer all types of African food, as well as handmade souvenirs, clothes, artworks, sauces, ceramics and much more.

The best places for a magical summer night
The Film Festival at the Rathausplatz
There is always a lot of anticipation in the air when it comes to the Film Festival at the Rathausplatz, as there is no better place to soak up those summer feelings than attending this event at the square in front of Vienna’s City Hall. For more than 25 years, over 90,000 visitors from all over the world have attended this festival. But what is it that makes this event so appealing?
This event combines cultural, culinary, and summer delights like no other. On a huge screen (located directly in front of the City Hall) visitors can watch a variety of recorded operas, ballets, concerts or musicals for free over the course of the whole summer season. While watching (or simply listening to) the best of Austria’s culture, you can fill your belly with the specialities from different countries and cultures, including Asian and Mexican food, and delicacies from Dalmatia, Greece, India or Italy. Maybe you even find something from your home country? Of course you can also have traditional Austrian meals like Käsespätzle, Kaiserschmarren or Topfenknödel. The festival takes place from June 30th to 2rd September.
The best Open Air Cinemas
Next to the Film Festival, there are also other areas that are transformed into open air cinemas during the summer. One of the most charming is Kino unter Sternen (Cinema under the stars) at the Karlsplatz. This outdoor cinema has been going strong for more than 20 years, and has always been the perfect event for romantic summer dates. The selected movies are often classics and timeless gems.
Another great event is the Kino am Dach (Cinema on the Roof) over the Hauptbücherei (Main library) in the 7th district. Here you can enjoy movies such as Loving Vincent or Titanic.
Vienna Residences wishes you an adventurous (but still relaxing) summer in Vienna. Enjoy!
